Project Run and Play - Designing for a Boy

It all started with this.

Yes, it is a polka dot crib sheet. When baby E. was born five months ago, I kept looking at her crib sheet during midnight feedings, thinking, "Hmmm, that would make a nice button down shirt for Eli." I know, I am weird. Well, it almost did. I envisioned this cool, urban outfit - a shirt and distressed black jeans. Can't you picture it?

I cut the pattern pieces and everything was going smoothly. I finished the cuffs. They looked perfect, just what I wanted them to look - the right size and nicely topstiched. And then, the disaster happened. It actually happened when I cut the pattern pieces, I just didn't notice in time. Somehow, I cut two sleeve pieces exactly the same, so one sleeve had the closure and the buttons on the back, and one on the front. Sigh. What an idiot. Since I didn't have any more fabric left, I had to cut off my perfect cuffs and make it into a short sleeve shirt.

I still think it's kind of cool, doesn't quite have the urban feel I was going for. Eli liked it.

 

The pants were a refashion project from a pair of super expensive designer jeans I got for a $1.00. That's right, one dollar. It did have a rather sizable hole in the crotch area. Hooray for holes! They have a real fly with the functioning zipper, and extra patches on the back pockets. That was Eli's contribution to the design.
