Recently I received an email from RaeAnna of Sewing Momma RaeAnna inviting me to participate in Snowflakes and Lace series hosted by Sewing Momma RaeAnna and Sew Very (Check out other entries and a link party on Veronica's blog). I happily signed up. I had a project in mind and I needed a series invitation to actually complete it. A while ago I purchased a sweater made out of the softest, most luxurious cashmere. I loved it, except for a small problem - a large hole in the sleeve. I mended the whole, then covered the sleeve in lace.
Not only did lace covered the hole, but it also added a unique detail and an unexpected pop of color to the otherwise plain sweater.

Not only did lace covered the hole, but it also added a unique detail and an unexpected pop of color to the otherwise plain sweater.
I searched for lace at several places, including Jo-Ann's, but couldn't find anything I liked or that would work for the project. A quick dig through my "to be refashioned" pile uncovered what I was looking for, except it was beige and didn't look right with the sweater. This was my first attempt at dyeing fabric. I think it was a success.
To achieve similar look, choose lace that's symmetrical with identical edges. Place a folded sheet of paper inside the sleeve to prevent sewing the sleeve shut. Use a matching thread to hand stitch the lace to the sleeve. You are done!
Thank you so much, Veronica and RaeAnnna for inviting me!

That is brilliant!!! I love the color and how you tied the outfit together with your accessories! Beautiful work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for salvaging the sweater. Oh, and thanks for the tip about putting paper in the sleeve to prevent sewing the sleeve together. I've never thought of doing that! Glad you joined us in the series, Olga! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely way to keep a sweater usable!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to fix the problem. It looks so much more unique now too! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely! I'm going to definitely remember this fix for a hole. Or maybe I'll make a hole just so I can do this!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea Olga! It looks absolutely gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteGO Olga!! Looking GOOD! What a great idea with the lace. I am wearing a sweater with a tiny hole in right now...hmmm...maybe not for much longer ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I usually just toss my worn stuff into the refashion bin for the kids... Maybe I should try salvaging something for myself for once! What dye did you use for the lace? It took really well!
ReplyDeleteHey Foxy momma! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea... I have to admit that I rarely use lace... but this gives it a modern twist! Great dye job!!!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great result! the lace added just the needed portion of "fanciness" to transform otherwise rather uninteresting sweater. I love the color combination, so much better than beige would have been! I imagine it will also work great with jeans. such a creative idea: amazing rescue project!
ReplyDeleteLove it!!! Looks so good the purple with gray. I thought to do something similar but with mint lace and never found it. How do you dye your lace?
ReplyDeleteIs there a special dye for polyester?
