A Bambi Dress

A while ago my friend An from Straight Grain posted a dress that I knew Ania would absolutely love. The fabric was the cutest. I immediately clicked on the link to the shop, Bambiblauw, and after navigating it for about half an hour (it's in Dutch) I reached the checked out only to discover that they didn't ship to the United States. Sigh. My next step involved extensive whining and complaining to An, and she graciously offered to get it for me. So not only she is the coolest blogger with the impeccable sense of style, she is also kind and giving. Yep, an impossibly high standard to reach. I am good at whining. (hey, it worked). :) :)

The fabric is a panel, and there was just not enough length to sew a dress long enough for Ania. I used an Ottobre pattern (6/2013 issue), slightly modified. The same I used here. I knew thatmy only otpion was to color block the top of the dress to add length. I was going to use some polka dotted Nani Iro fabric that I had in my stash, but then realized I had enough scraps to be able to cut the top of the dress from the same panel! Yeah. I added the fabric from the back to the front, and the fabric from the front to the back. I think it adds some interest.

I also forgot that  the tiny bambis in the back make lines, didn't pay any attention to that at all. It could have been a disaster, but luckily the sewing gods were with me that day, because everything lined up perfectly. Phew. The dress moved in the picture, and it looks like the lines are off, but trust me, it's all good.

I made the dress for Ania's kindergarten graduation. Now, I will let you on a secret how to become the most popular mother among all the kindergarten girls. Make a bambi dress. Yep, that's all. Other mothers tried the whole year to win the title - volunteered, brought snacks, smiled a lot, etc, etc. They put a good fight and came so close to the finishing line, and then I swooped in with the bambi dress and it was all over. The victory was mine. LOL

Ania loves her dress and I do too. Thank you An for sending me such cool fabric!

I would love if you follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Bloglovin!

  7. Hahaha, yup they tried SO hard...and yet instead they should have taken sewing lessons. TOO funny! LOVE the dress and the photos. But to call unmatched Bambis for a disaster is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?! LOL. I'm glad it all worked out :-)
