Simpilicty 7189

When I was working on the shirt I kept lovingly addressing it as the pink atrocity. Then it became a pink mess.  But in the end it kind of grew on me. Kind of.

Let's start with the pattern, Simplicity 7189. The pattern is not bad per se. It is cute and summery with many different options and trims. It could be a great basic pattern. The problem I have is that it is huge and shapeless. I cut out size 4 and according to the measurements given it should  fit my child just right. Instead it was huge. The bottom is so wide that it is loose on me. The 5/8" seam allowances are totally unnecessary, in my opinion, and just added to my frustration with the pattern.

Then there is the fabric. I like it by itself, so sweet and girly (It's Sarah Jane, Children at Play). But when you add million gathers to that, it becomes a little sugar overload. Also, I am not a huge fan of sewing garments with quilters cotton. Sometimes it works, but I think it would have been much better made out of something light and drapy (why is it not a word? :))and not so heavy.

The pattern calls for a regular zipper, but I installed an invisible one. I think it looks better, plus it is easier to put in. :)

Ania is happy with the top. Pink polka dot shoes were her idea. She thought they went perfect with the shirt. She also wanted to paint her nails pink. I let her. I choose my battles. :)

  7. Hi Olga, I made a blouse using the same fabric: http://pinterest.com/pin/545428204841820533/.
You're right, light-weight fabric is better for gathered, but Sarah Jane's prints are cute :)

  8. I love the invisible zipper! This pattern is causing me major frustration right now! I think I'm actually going to have to call in back up to help me finish it! attaching the rounded yoke to the shirt is difficult and I think could have been done in an easier way than the directions called for! In my area finding child friendly fabric that ISN'T quilter's fabric is hard as well!
