SImplicity 1109 Review

A while ago I was at Joann's for something benign like thread, and of course I had to look at fabric. I didn't really need any fabric, but you know how that goes. I stumbled across this awesome geometric print in the clearance section. It was also 50% off. Clearly, the Universe wanted me to buy it.  I think it's some sort of upholstery fabric, but it behaves similar to neoprene.

The pattern is Simplicity 1109. It's a pretty versatile pattern with several views. I made view A. I chose the size according to my measurements, and the fit is spot on. The one thing worthwhile mentioning is that it's short. Very short. I added about 1.5 inch to lengthen it and it's still not exactly long.

I haven't made any significant changes to the pattern aside from lengthening it and sewing the pleats down a bit to make it less poofy close the the waist. It's pretty easy and straightforward to make. I am sure I will make more.

I made the skirt just before my trip to Switzerland last spring. I brought it with me, thinking the photoshoot in Geneva would be way more exciting than in our suburbia. I was planning to be all cool and urban, but then we ran out of time. The pictures were taken on our way to the thermal baths in the mountains. Certainly not exactly an urban setting. We stopped at the gas station for a bathroom break, walked around a bit and stumbled upon the most picturesque valley full of vineyards, grazing sheep and cutest cottages. Of course it was noon and no shade anywhere, but it had to happen.

I brought high heel shoes with me, but then it seemed ridiculous to wear them there, so I dropped the shoes and my leather jacket next to the country road. We walked away to take the pictures. Out of the corner of my eye I saw and old lady pull buy and stop next to the pile of clothes. We could see her, but she didnt' see us. Her face expression was priceless, a picture of total excitement and curiosity. It never occured to me how utterly out of place my fancy shoes and jacket looked like. She cranked open the window and just stared in unbelief. lol We came down to explain and she just laughed and laughed. It's such a cute memory to go with the photos.

Then we found a tractor. I was a bit apprehensive to take pictures with the tractor, since we are obviously on somebody's private proterty. Nobody shooed us away, so here you have it, the skirt and the tractor.

Just a little Marylin Monroe moment. lol

  9. I wondered if you can help me. I'm trying to make this skirt. It was very confusing to me that there was a pleat at the side seam, since it's not really shown in the sketches. I think I have figured that out, tho. I wanted to confirm with you that there is a smaller box pleat at the side seams. Then, when I sewed together the hip yoke, when I pin it to the skirt it's too long! I matched up the CF and the notch, and it's still too long for the skirt circumference. I double checked that I cut out the right size, so I can't figure out what the problem is. Do you have any ideas? Thanks.
