An Ottobre Dress in Pink Flamingoes

I had a rather large remnant leftover from the awesome flamingo fabric I used to make Ania this dress, so I decided to make one for Evelyn.

My original thought was to go the obvious route - a fitted bodice and a gathered skirt, except the flamngoes turned out to be way to big for that. It had to be a maxi dress for Evelyn and I knew she wouldn't wear one. Ottobre magazine to the rescue!

The pattern came from 3/2012 Ottbore, design #13.I made a shirt version of it years ago when I first starting blogging. Ania is so small here. And let's not talk about my awesome, ahem, photography skills.

It's a perfect pattern for summer, there is no lining, so it's very lightweight and breezy. I did make a few modifications, mainly swamped the back button placket into an invisible zipper closure. I also had to make the gathers much smaller in the back, otherwise I had major problems with the flamingo in the back.

I didn't have enough yardage to play around and match the flamingo parts perfectly. The best I could do was to have a head with two legs, or rather one and a half leg on one side of the seam; and a butt with two legs on the other side. The four legged Frankenstein flamingo looked like a science experiment that went really really wrong. So I removed some of the width in the gathered part of the back. I was getting a perfect flamingo, except there was a tiny third leg sticking out in between two long legs. Ahem. Not good and really funny. Ok, I am immature. lol I removed even more of the gathers and I think it worked well. The flamingo is a bit squished together, but it has two legs. And that's important. It also is a bit off maybe by a millimeter at the top, but it's not noticeable unless you are looking for it.

Evelyn loves her new dress and chooses to wear it quite often. It also is quite a show stopper with the unusual fabric design. She enjoys all the compliments she is getting.

  8. Ho totally adorable!! I loved that fabric already from the first piece you made with it, and this is as beautiful! I can imagine it to be quite a challenge to get the pieces together with the big size of the flamingoes :-) must have been a funny process as well :-) But you did a great job!! I really live how it turned out! if I would see her running with it, I would also stop and look and compliment her/you!!
