Burda Oversized Sweater

I have very mixed feelings about this make. The over sized fashion seems to be on trend and has been dominating my IG feed for over a year now. I was never a huge fan, some things I like, other things not at all. I think it can look beautiful and people can pull it off well. I am not one of those people. I came to believe that it helps to have broader shoulders and and narrow hips to really look good. I don't have either. I am tall, but my shoulders are narrow and I am more of a pear shape. So what possessed me to make a decidedly oversized sweater? I think mostly curiosity.

Look at me standing on my veranda looking at the beautiful lake and the mountains. Ok, it's not my veranda, it's a beautiful hundred years old chateau in France. My sister, who lives in Switzerland, got married in January and had a reception in the most scenic place. This is the second day after the wedding. I didn't dress like that to go to the wedding. Just thought, I would clarify that. lol

The pattern is a modified Burda pattern that came from 12/2015 Burda Style magazine. I am sure you can find it on their website, but I am not sure how to look it up. Please, let me know if you know how. I made a few modifications. The pattern has a seam in the middle, both in the back and in the front, I eliminated that just because I didn't want to match the ombre design of the fabric. It also has a v-neck both in the front and in the back. I didn't want a V-neck in the back, so I eliminated it to. My sweater is a tad shorter, because I didn't have enough fabric, the story of my life.

Totally pretending I am drinking, but I did have a bit of wine during the ceremony, so excuse my tired face. This picture is funny to me, this is not how I usually roll, not quite my daily life style. :) :) When I first made the sweater, I hated it. I thought I looked like a big purple shapeless ombre blob. Just no. I took it with me on my trip to the wedding, hoping my sister would love it. She didn't want it either. Go figure. The fabric came from my stash, it's some sort of sweater knit that I got as a remnant. There no visible stitching outside because I hemmed the sleeves and the bottom by hand. I also finished the neckline by hand, so it's really clean and seamless looking on the outside.

I brought it with me to the chateau because I wanted to be comfortable and also because I could wear leggings with it since it was long enough. I am late to the leggings game, mostly because for years I tried to convince the world that leggings are not pants. Obviously,  I lost that battle and finally surrendered. I was missing out all these years, it is so comfortable, That's all I want to wear. But I digress. Back to the sweater. I do love where the sleeve starts, I think they got it right. I have seen a few other similar patterns where the sleeve is not dropped as much and honestly it looks like a person made a wrong size. Here I think the proportions are just right.

Here is the funny part, I have been wearing it all the time, mostly because of the leggings. I don't really have too many things in my wardrobe long enough to wear with the leggings. Whenever I wear it, I always get compliments. People seem to like it. It grew on me a bit too, it's comfortable and easy to wear for sure. I do like the shape, especially in the back. Does it make me feel beautiful and pulled together, no, not really. Am I a new convert to the oversized fashion? No, not really either. I strongly believe that it's important that clothes makes you feel beautiful, makes you walk straighter, hold your head higher. This doesn't do it for me. I don't find it flattering, but of course, what's flattering is a judgement call. I might explore more of this trend, though, it might go away by the time I decide to do it. What are your thoughts on oversized fashion trend?

  1. Yay, you came around to this sweater! I love this style (as you already know) and am glad that you have finally jumped on the oversized train, haha. And I would have totally been with you on the leggings are not pants thing. In fact, I still don't wear them, but that's because of my hang-ups than anything else. I think you look great! And love the photos -- what a beautiful setting!!

  2. Okay, this is gorgeous! You are gorgeous! I agree with you on the oversized trend, it just isn't for my short, petite, pear figure. I think that the front v makes this work really well, and I want to make one RIGHT NOW.

  8. Two short thoughts on this subject: 1. Love the colors, the fade out AND the oversized look on you. 2. I hate to speak it out (because it might sounds offensive - what it shouldn't), but the edgy styles makes you look younger. Not in a teenie bopper way but in a good way.

  12. Gah, you NEED to get over your skepticism for oversized clothes. It looks so GREAT on you and I must say I agree with Bettina up there... Maybe you need to try to make some oversized clothes in more fancy fabrics? Would that help?
