I wanted to flip Heidi's bubble shorts pattern for a while. I printed it in May, to be exact, but then things got in a way. Celebrations, migraines (unrelated to celebrations) and a two year old with a fractured fibula kept me away from sewing. So today is the last day to upload pictures in Frances Suzanne awesome series. The challenge is to take a pattern chosen for a particular month and flip it. June was the bubble shorts patent by Elegance and Elephants.
So I went with a skirt. It's made out of heavy corduroy that's difficult to photograph, but you got the idea. I kept the side panels, added lace, and made the pockets flat. The fabric was just too bulky to add any gathers. The straps crisscross in the back. I also added buttons covered with lace for an extra detail.
It is still a little large, but hopefully will fit her fine in the fall. The child is growing like a weed.
Overall I am happy with it. At first I thought it was a little too adult-ish, and questioned my decision to add lace. But, without it I think it would have been too plain.
It is easy to turn the pattern into skirt. Cut off the seat (crotch) area and the seam allowances as shown in picture, then cut on fold. Use the rest of the pattern pieces, except measure the width at the bottom of the skirt and cut a band to fit.
Now I am curios how it would look like made out of different fabric, something soft and drapey (apparently, it's not a word. It should be. :) I see more bubble skirts in my future.
