Men's Shirt Upcylce

I decided to upcycle another men's shirt for Project Run and Play. My husband only wears button down shirts to work, so I always have a fresh bunch to reimagine into something new. I love upcycling men's shirts, I have done a few in the past (here, here, here). My favorite part is the fabric - if you use a nice shirt, it feels great and often doesn't wrinkle much.

I used my husbands shirt, It' was a Lacoste shirt, quite nice and quite expensive. It was also almost new, my husband somehow got caught on a nail and ripped the shirt in the back. Luckily, I still had enough material to work with. I used my pattern, the Mulberry tunic (you can purchase it on Etsy now) again to make, well, a tunic for Ania.

When recycling/upcycling things, especially shirts, my goal is to try not to make it look obviously upcycled, but rather as if it was sewn from all new materials.  One of the things I always do is replace cuffs and the collar. I just think they often look way too big on a child. I used pretty floral I purchased at the garage sale a while ago to replace cuffs, add a hood and also a casing around the waist. I also replaced the buttons with the pretty pearly ones.

I am pleased with the results. I think it's girly, comfortable and can be worn with leggings or jeans. Something she will wear quite a bit to school.

I am pretty sure she was happy to see a duck. I think she was happy to look at anything, as long as she didn't have to stand still. I have a hard time with taking any pictures of her that are in focus. She is constantly on a move. Anybody can relate?
In other news I joined Instagram. I know I am three years too late to the party, but I was finally convinced that it is THE thing to join. So far I am loving it. I would love if you follow me!

  2. That's great! Pretty but practical. And I do often feel guilty about making things from 'new fabric' as I always think there is so much fabric in the world already just waiting to be used/re-used. Very clever idea!
And your blog is looking good! Love the new design!

  9. Olga, I love the combination of fabrics. I agree with you about refashioning with men's dress shirts, the fabric washes & wears so wonderfully. Your daughter looks great in her new tunic!

  10. Olga, You did a beautiful repurpose on that shirt. How did you get the arms eyes seam to fit so well?
How about a little tutorial on how you do that. I would love to learn from you. By the way, I like the floral with the stripe as it makes it such a 'girlie' outfit.
