Ottobre Magazine Fall Jacket

I am back from a month long vacation with something I made just before we left. I shared a sneak peek on the Instagram before we left.

The pattern is a slightly modified Ottobre (6/2013) coat pattern. The suggested fabric is boiled wool, which I believe has a bit of stretch. Mine has none, but it worked. I added a pocket with a zipper, and  used snaps instead of buttons. That's right, no more fear of snaps, practically the boss of snaps now. :) I cut up my old leather jacket to finish the seams outside. I really like how it turned out, makes it look expensive.  All the seams inside are finished with bias tape. It's really pretty, I wish I remembered to take a picture. :)

This was supposed to be a quick and easy project. I was busy planning out trip and wanted to be done in a day. Silly me. It took me a week to finish.

I made every single mistake possible, completely silly things too. I am pretty sure I unpicked every single seam. And don't even start me on that pocket. It was as if I never sewed before. In the end, it's not quite perfect, but I can live with it. Does it ever happen to you, when you keep making silly mistakes? I think, I can not be rushed while sewing. The timed sewing competitions are certainly not for me, ha.

I think the shape of the jacket is nice. In my experience, the Ottobre patterns have a very nice fit. I haven't made anything that I was unhappy with.

The fabric came from my stash. I purchased it at the garage sale. A former seamstress was getting rid of her stash, it was like hitting a jack pot. lol It's quilted, one side is burgundy and the other one is black. I made the Senna tote from it.

Eli is happy with the jacket and with the modeling gig. I can't believe he is almost 10! Most of the patterns don't come in his size. makes me a bit sad. I hope he enjoys my makes for a couple more years.

  3. Great jacket! I hope he won't grow out of it for another two seasons at least. I don't know why he should stop enjoying your makes, it looks totally cool and stylish on him! I m sure even teenagers would appreciate. And the pocket was totally worth the struggles.

  5. Oh myyyyy that jacket is amazing. I'm so blown away by the leather -- and I hope you post some pictures of the inside (here, or on IG). I would love to see it. I do hope you keep sewing for your son. It's nice to see some boy clothes, and he is such a great model!

  6. It turned out beautiful! What a handsome boy! I love the leather binding. Was that hard? Every single project I make has several silly mistakes! Glad to know I'm not alone.

  7. Wow! That looks so professional! And handsome boy.... It's so inspiring that you're sewing for your big boy. I'm a bit stumped when it comes to sewing for my nine-year-old. I know he won't wear anything that looks handmade, and isn't 'cool', so it really needs to be 'spot on'. This looks like you've achieved that!

And I wouldn't tell ever that you made any mistakes, looks perfection to me. And if I can reclaim any title in the world for myself it would be " Queen of silly mistakes"! heheh

  11. The jacket looks great! It looks totally professional! I love Ottobre patterns as well, but I do find sometimes they run a little short in both the length and the sleeves. This one looks spot on though and your photos are 😍😍😍. Also I don't like sewing under pressure either! Not one bit!
